BLACK-SEA KEMENCE
Two separate kinds of Kemences are used in the performance of the
Turkish music. The popular folk instrument used in the Black Sea
Region is called the "Karadeniz Kemencesi" and the one
used in the Classical Turkish Music is called the "Klasik Kemence".
The Black Sea kemence is played by applying the finger-tips on the
steel strings. Three-string kemence is tuned in the order of RE,
LA and SOL. Kemence which was spreader over to Asia and Europe has,
also, been very popular among the Seljukees and the Iranians. The
Black Sea Kemence is performed in solo. Its body is made out of
walnut and mulberry trees.
1,5-2 mm chest is made of pine and fir trees. The bow is applied
on the three strings at the same time.
Dr. Cengiz Sarıkuş made a reform by changing the sound and the bow length
and modernised the general view of the instrument.
